Londoner Nancy North has been released from the psych ward after suffering a psychotic break that shuttered her dream restaurant. Now, she and her partner Felix must relocate to a tiny flat in a grubby divided Victorian. The next day, their new downstairs neighbor, Kira, is found hanged. Horrified, Nancy recognizes Kira as the distressed woman she recently encountered on the street and insistently questions the Met's suicide theory. She's easily dismissed: Felix has helpfully caught everyone up on her "delicate" mental state. After neighbors report that she's been sneaking around and has threatened the neighborhood busybody, Felix has Nancy involuntarily committed. This time, Nancy wields strategic acquiescence and emerges determined to reveal the sinister truths concealed behind the neighborhood's closed doors. Fortunately, she finds that DI Maud O'Connor (from Has Anyone Seen Charlotte Salter, 2024) isn't afraid to out her fellow detective's shoddy investigation. This second episode in an outstanding series blending psychological thriller and procedural (à la Elizabeth George and Kate Atkinson) offers a prismatic, unputdownable take on coercive control.
