Book - 2025

"From misconceptions to systemic barriers, disability is a world often misunderstood. However, the true measure of a society's progress is how we ensure that every voice, every perspective, and every person matters. By embracing diversity, communities build a stronger, more empathetic, and richer world. The accessible main text, augmented with informative fact boxes, challenges preconceived notions and encourages readers to become champions of a more inclusive, equitable future. A list of resources gives a starting point for independent research into the ways a more inclusive society benefits everyone"--Publisher's website.

Review by Booklist Review

This short book in the Disability Pride series (6 titles) is packed with information about various forms of inclusion for people with disabilities, both visible and invisible. It covers inclusion in schools and workplaces, in designing spaces, in technology, in communities, and in the past and future. At first glance, the text feels a bit lengthy and dense, but once readers dive in, they will find a wealth of information on both the history of inclusion and ways to promote and participate in inclusion efforts today. Well-chosen photos illustrate key concepts, and the historical photos are especially interesting. Captions and "Learn More" features supplement the information in the main text. A glossary, an index, and a "Read More" section round out the back matter. An informative book on an important topic.

Gr 3--5--This series highlights the significance of accessibility and advocacy. The authors explain the necessity of the Americans with Disabilities Act, describing the changes it brought about. Both physical and digital accessibility features are discussed, with practical examples provided. The series also explores accessibility in education, featuring photos of schools for disabled children before the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act was passed. Key concepts like integrated classrooms and IEPs are clearly explained. The text emphasizes the importance of using respectful language and fostering empathy. A crucial takeaway is that these advancements would not have been possible without dedicated advocates. While celebrities and activists are highlighted, the text makes it clear that anyone can advocate for change. Each book in the series includes an explanation of the disability pride flag, a glossary, additional resources, and an index. VERDICT This is an essential resource for school and classroom libraries.
