Hügelkultur for soil health

Streaming video - 2024

Johnson County Extension Master Gardener John Weeg has been gardening for most of his life. His current focus is on ways to improve soil quality through Hügelkultur. Hügelkultur is a centuries-old Eastern European gardening technique that involves creating a large mound with base of decaying wood debris and compostable plant materials, which is then planted as a raised bed. Erected with minimal cost, Hügelkultur offers a blend of ecological benefits and practical advantages, making it a valuable tool for gardeners interested in enhancing soil health and sustainability. John has constructed several Hügelkulturl sites to compare which configurations improve soil performance. The Second Sunday Garden Forums are cosponsored by Project GREEN... and the Iowa City Public Library.
