At 19, Lo still hasn't had a vision of her soulmate, like all women in her family do, and she's starting to worry that she might end up lonely and cursed, like sad Cousin Lin. Lo is hoping that her summer in Italy will provide the requisite vision as well as bring her closer to the memory of her mother, who took a similar trip during college. Sure enough, the vision does appear almost as soon as she and her best friend Teller (formerly just a nerd, currently a broken-hearted hot nerd) arrive at their hostel in Venice. Canadian Caleb lives a romantic, vagabond life, and his romantic dates are like something out of one of Lo's favorite 1990s rom-coms. But can Caleb handle something as strong as fate, and can Lo really give up the increasingly intense feelings she's experiencing for Teller, even though ditching the vision could curse her forever? Lea (Woke Up Like This, 2023) again plays with magical realism in a fun, romantic setting with wanderlust-fueling adventures and likable characters with genuine connections, all framed by relatable family pressure.
