The large family that resides in Whimbrel House (last seen in Boy of Chaotic Making, 2024) has grown by four children, two dogs, and one shape-shifting Druid, Fallon. Seeing the familiar adults of the house--Merritt, Hulda, and Owein--raising their families and fighting to protect them will be comforting and fun for fans of this world. With the return of the big bad, Silas, Owein knows that he is one of a few magicians left who is strong enough to take him on. But he doesn't feel completely up to the fight. Additionally, Owein is engaged to Cora, a member of the nobility, but he is torn between the agreement he made and his feelings for Fallon. Readers will enjoy seeing Owein get pulled to center stage; this relies on the character building and relationships from the previous books, but pulls the story in a new and fresh direction. Fans of Holmberg's work will relish this addition to an established series.
