In the aftermath of Matheus Cierran's murder (Stars Undying, 2022), Admiral Anita Decretan divides her time between the queen of Szayet's bed and the watering holes of Alectelo until she receives word of the last surviving of Cierran's murderers. With characteristic recklessness, she takes her men across the Kutayeti border to a satellite that is more than just a satellite. She makes quick work of the former councillor and, in escaping, discovers a secret about the workings of Kutayet and how the pearl that is Szayet's greatest resource and forms the computers which hold their gods is being used. Events spiral quickly--this invasion of Kutayeti space precipitates a war; Cierran's heir, Julhan, is consolidating his power and shaping a cult of Cierran back on Ceiao; Szayet wants to be more than just a client queen. Tucked inside the romance and imperial power struggle are threads about legacy and loyalty and survival, both individual and cultural, and the uses of myth. Anita is a desperately flawed character, prone to headlong charges and with wildly conflicting desires, but all that makes for an entertaining story.
