This charming story from Coco seeks to answer the question, "Why do cats love books?" The text suggests it might be due to the "scratchiness of the covers" or simply that books are "perfect places that make them purr." The story ends with a delightful message about how books make everyone feel at home wherever they may be in the world, an idea that is emphasized by the book's wide variety of character and cat illustrations, ensuring that a range of readers is represented in the story. Coco's lively, bold illustration style stems from traditional screen-printing techniques. Heavy use of yellow and purple create a complementary color scheme throughout and helps elicit feelings of vibrancy and whimsicality to match the silly nature of cats. The author's excellent use of white space and composition allows the text on the page to breathe so that the spreads don't feel too overwhelming. This companion to 2024's Dogs Love Books, Too will surely be a staple for libraries and young cat lovers everywhere.

PreS-Gr 1--This jubilant picture book celebrates a love of books through cats. Each page considers why cats might like books: Does reading take them places? Or is it because books connect them to humans in the best possible ways? Each concept is illustrated with simple, joyful images that show a variety of cats and humans enjoying books together. The youngest readers will love this rumination on the combo of books and felines. VERDICT This is a fun, cozy read to remind everyone how wonderful it is to share books with those they love, whether two legs or four.--Debbie Tanner

This whimsical book asks, "Why do cats love books so much?" In just a few words per page, several possibilities are explored, including the appeal of scratchy covers and characters they can relate to. But the speaker finally comes to the conclusion that it's because "books make us feel at home." Coco's mixed-media illustrations, primarily in yellow and purple, feature cozy scenes of kids snuggling with and reading to their cats. A fitting bedtime story for any feline or child. Felines as bibliophiles--who knew? Kitties have inspired and starred in many stories, but did you know they love books very much, too? An unseen narrator asks children if they know why that is. Could it be the "scratchiness" of their covers? Do the characters and plots resonate with them? Perhaps they enjoy being transported to faraway places? Maybe cats love books for the same reasons people do: "Books make us feel at home. Wherever we may be. That is why we all love books!" Adults sharing this understated and thought-provoking but playful story should encourage children to offer their own opinions about why we all love books; little ones will likely be glad to volunteer their ideas. Interested children may even want to collaborate on a picture book written and illustrated expressly for cats. The bright acrylic illustrations have a childlike whimsy, depicting colorful, cavorting cats in situations that will be familiar to any feline fancier: raking their claws across a book, lying across the pages of an open book, and perching on their owners' heads during read-alouds. Some characters have paper-white skin; others vary in skin tone. One child is depicted in a wheelchair. Endpapers feature cat ID collars with unique cat names. An upbeat ode to books featuring cats aplenty--what more could readers ask for?(Picture book. 4-7) Copyright (c) Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
