Drop dead

Lily Chu

Book - 2025

"Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn't mind being called "Lady Death." It suits the ice queen persona she's cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn't hesitate to run the obituary...only to discover that Dot is very much alive. Nadine's screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy-she's been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal. Intrigued, Wes goes to the source to learn more-only to discover Nadine had the exact same idea...and the infuriating woman isn't willing to respect di...bs. Typical. At first, Dot refuses to speak to either of the squabbling pair, but then they receive an unusual request-work together, and Dot will share everything. The offer seems too good to be true...and of course, it is: in a bitter twist of irony, Dot dies for real before she can finish recounting her story. Not all is lost, however. The estate's executor allows Wes and Nadine access to Dot's sprawling wonderland of a mansion for three weeks to find their answer."--

In Chu's (The Takedown) latest, obituary editor Nadine Barbault commits the ultimate transgression when she accidentally publishes the obit of Dot Voline, an eccentric literary icon who is very much alive. Demoted and on the hunt for the reclusive author, Nadine is surprised to encounter Wesley Chen, a former classmate and journalist at the rival Spear. The pair pursue an interview with Dot and are shocked to be offered her story, with one catch: it can only be published after her death. When Dot suddenly dies before they have the full story, Nadine and Wesley ignore demands to let it go. Instead, they start to search through Dot's intricately decorated mansion for something that would explain the scandal in her past. In addition to finding what they think is a clue, they must learn trust each other as they navigate the complexities of their relationship. This mystery-infused romance explores the emotional fortitude that both personal and professional challenges demand and the great rewards that await those who stay true to themselves. VERDICT Fans of contemporary romances will enjoy this quirky office love story that will leave them wishing they had the moxie (and mansion) of the unforgettable Dot.--Judy Garner
