After alien invaders known as the Mazoku attacked Tokyo decades ago, another group called the Moon Computer visited the planet and gave five siblings otherworldly powers, and they became the Moon Troopers. When attacks began to spread across the globe, new branches were formed. Maise and her family are the protectors of the Los Angeles branch, but being a superhero isn't her top priority. She's a teenager with schoolwork to keep up with, friendships to maintain, and a serious crush she'd like to pursue. However, when the Mazoku begin to evolve and tragedy strikes the Shiraki family, Maise must do her best to step up as a Moon Trooper without sacrificing her personal life. Reminiscent of Super Sentai and The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Family Force V is a modern take on a classic concept that's both refreshing and nostalgic. The engaging story is rendered in vibrant colors and bold action sequences, which will give this lots of appeal for young teens, especially fans of manga.

Gr 7 Up--Maise Shiraki never asked to be part of the family business--she was born into it. Long before her birth, demonic-looking aliens called the Mazoku invaded Earth. In response, an interstellar traveler trained five young Japanese siblings, granting them powers and abilities to fight back. But as years passed with no clear victor, the siblings went their separate ways, and their descendants continued the battle. Maise, however, would rather pursue her passion for illustration than fight aliens or uphold her family's legacy. Often late and neglectful in assisting her parents and twin siblings in their battles, she struggles with her role. But when her father is killed in an attack, she is left with overwhelming guilt and uncertainty about where she belongs. This blend of manhwa-style art and a superhero-origin story has the makings of an exciting new YA series. Readers will root for Maise as she navigates obstacles that challenge her place within the family. While the characters are well-developed, they sometimes fall into familiar archetypes. However, the vibrant artwork, bold colors, and action-packed scenes will capture the interest of even the most reluctant readers. VERDICT An explosive start to a promising new series that deserves a place on library shelves.--Esther Keller

A teen compelled by her family legacy to defend the planet from aliens tries to figure out what she wants. After an alien invasion in Tokyo, the Moon Computer named five Japanese siblings Moon Troopers, warriors provided with powers to defend our planet. As time passed and the alien battle spread globally, this fight for human survival became a regular occurrence--Rainbow Alerts on phones warned people to steer clear of combat areas. The original Moon Troopers set up branches in different countries, and their descendants carried on the family role. Growing up in Los Angeles, 15-year-old Maise Shiraki isn't an ordinary girl, much as she'd like to be. Her family--Japanese American dad, Thai American mom, and 12-year-old twin siblings, Axl and Alex--are Moon Troopers, and together, they're stronger. It's too bad that these days Maise's not very interested in all this family togetherness. But when a new creature emerges, stronger than they've ever known before, and its arrival culminates in a devastating tragedy, Maise is forced to face her fears and decide who she wants to be. Braly's story features engaging family dynamics, and Maise's emotionally compelling arc of self-discovery and self-exploration make her a sympathetic main character. Well-fleshed-out side characters have their own agendas and internal conflicts. Lin's dynamic full-color art flows exceptionally well, evoking different feelings through contrasting spreads. The occasional inclusion of Japanese and Thai script adds to the immersive experience. An action-packed adventure that's full of heart.
