Review by Kirkus Book Review

The return of an uncle she hasn't seen for many years sends Mary Russell and her husband, Sherlock Holmes, in pursuit of the Irish Crown Jewels. The prize, known officially as the Jewels of the Order of St. Patrick, vanished from a locked safe in Dublin Castle in 1907. Suspicion arose against Sir Arthur Vicars, the Ulster King of Arms charged with keeping them safe, and his two aides: his nephew Pierce Gun Mahony and his friend Francis Shackleton. But even though Holmes himself consulted on the case, no arrests were ever made, and the report DCI John Kane submitted to Scotland Yard was never released. Eighteen years later, Kane is retired, Holmes has moved on, and relations between Ireland and England have been permanently soured by the disappearance of the jewels days before they were to adorn a ceremony in which the visiting King George had planned to install a new baron in the Order. Mary is happy to see Jacob Russell, whom she's long assumed to be dead, but much less happy to realize that he played a pivotal role in the theft. Since everyone involved is less interested in assigning blame than in recovering the treasure, she, Uncle Jake, and Holmes try to figure out where it might be stashed so that they can talk themselves into those places and search them. The results, based on an actual theft and reviving several historical figures associated with it, are short on detection and Sherlockiana, long on Irish adventures and family ties between Mary and Uncle Jake. Mostly for fans of the Holmes--Russell franchise, who'll find much to enjoy. Copyright (c) Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
