My first book of evolution

Sheddad Kaid-Sala Ferrón

Book - 2024

On our planet, life is everywhere. Wherever you look, there are animals, bacteria, fungi, and plants that seem to be in perfect harmony with their surroundings. But how is it possible that there is such an incredible variety of living things on Earth? Equally astonishingly, they all appear to be perfectly designed to live in their environment. My First Book of Evolution tells the story of how biological evolution has shaped life over time, and how this extraordinary biological diversity is descended from a common ancestor shared by absolutely every living organism that inhabits Earth. Will you join us on the fascinating journey through the history of life on our planet? Simple concepts such as what is a family tree, what is a species, what ...is a cell and more complex ideas of natural selection, adaptation, speciation and the inheritance of traits are explained clearly using imaginative and appealing charts, graphics and illustrations accompanied by simple, bite-size nuggets of explanatory text.

Review by School Library Journal Review

Gr 6--8--While the "my first" construct of the title seems to reference primers for toddlers, this volume provides an excellent and expansive overview of evolution and related topics for upper elementary and middle schoolers. Altarriba and Ferrón fit an engaging and clear introductory biology course into just under 50 picture book pages, including information on how evolution works, Darwin and Mendel, cells and cell parts, DNA, heredity, and more. This is a lot for readers to process; thankfully, the effective visual layout of this title expertly uses various text features such as text size, color, speech bubbles, and more to draw readers' attention to the main idea and most important aspects of each section. These features can also help adults scaffold the information to share the more basic concepts with younger readers if necessary. VERDICT Perfect for students just beginning their study of evolution or for those who need a refresher, this is a worthy addition to the shelves.--Maria Bohan
