Gwendolyn Lanscarr helped her sisters flee their overbearing cousin and find love, and now she's ready to do something for herself. Ever since crossing paths with the mysterious Beckett Steele, she has been waiting for him to call in the favor she owes so she can explore their connection further. When the favor turns out to be partnering with elderly Lady Orpington in a whist tournament, Gwendolyn is understandably put out. It becomes a bit more exciting, however, when Beck accompanies them under a false name and Gwendolyn realizes she's finally part of an intriguing plot. With this exhilarating, atmospheric novel, a sequel to One Dangerous Night, Maxwell completes her "Gambler's Daughters" trilogy; the installments can also be read as stand-alones. Love scenes are sparse but not lacking in heat. A fast pace and perilous adventure pair well with the witty banter to yield a wholly engaging reading experience. VERDICT Recommend to those seeking a richly detailed Regency romance brimming with secrets and suspense and to fans of Sabrina Jeffries, Ella Quinn, and Eloisa James.--Lauren Hackert
