Onomatopanda radiates charm and cleverness from the title to the last page. Author-illustrator Coat defines this neologism as "Words that imitate the sounds they describe. Onomatopoeia with a panda!" Coat's adorable and often funny illustrations follow a panda through its day. Each page focuses on one action, and the panda and a few accompanying objects, often in bright color, are generally shown against a white background. Each illustration is accompanied by one evocative word. The panda wakes up to a "BRRRRRRRING!!!" and goes "SPLASH!" in a puddle amid the "drip-drop" of the rain. Its car goes "vroom" and "SCREEECH!" and food makes the sounds "crunch" and "munch." The day concludes with a "yawn" and a "snore." This playful book is fun and appropriate for a wide range of ages. For the youngest children, it is a simple read-aloud without too many words--one that has enough humor to appeal to parents, as well. As elementary-age children start learning about poetic devices in school, they may also enjoy the book's witty examples of onomatopoeia. For lovers of pandas, poetry, or just fun!
