Review by School Library Journal Review

Gr 3--6--Shackleton's School for Seekers gathers gifted children from around the world, each possessing extraordinary abilities that make them exceptional seekers and adventurers. While the premise may sound familiar, this story offers a fresh twist. Students at Shackleton's have unique talents--some understand any language, others hear voices from the past, and some can find hidden objects. As the school's head, Dr. Adichie, explains, "Ours is an educational institution that favors the bold and the kind, the curious and resilient risk-takers." Among these students are Fern, powerful yet timid; Jordan, daring but reckless; and Zack, the youngest and least experienced. When they embark on a mysterious class trip with Dr. Adichie and other students, their adventure takes an unexpected turn. Separated from their group, they must learn to trust one another and embrace their abilities to survive the formidable Keepers who suddenly appear. This graphic novel originated on the Epic! reading and learning platform. Fast-paced and action-packed, it features bright, engaging artwork and a racially diverse cast. However, the breakneck pace leaves character development lacking, and frequent time jumps can be disorienting. VERDICT While it doesn't break new ground, this is an enjoyable and magical tale for readers with a taste for adventure.--Amy Ribakove
