Megan Maynor

Book - 2025

"In a kingdom full of busy, clever people, no one has time to cook. Luckily the Knights of Dinner make sure the villagers are well fed. It could be Pizza Knight or Noodle Knight, Dumpling Knight, even New Recipe Knight. No knight is everybody's favorite, but every knight is somebody's favorite. That is, until Taco Knight comes to town--and tries to turn every night into taco night"--Publisher's description.

Review by School Library Journal Review

K-Gr 3--This funny picture book uses a well-known medieval backdrop. Sandwich Knight, Soup Knight, and Pizza Knight are joined by a newcomer, Taco. On his first day, people are excited to eat tacos, so much so that the Taco Knight serves tacos every day until he gets booed. Young readers and parents will enjoy food-related puns and the bright, colorful illustrations. The fancy lettering and "once upon a time" beginning help set the stage for a book full of over-the-top facial expressions and cartoonish knights with food. The illustrations help the pace of the story until the Taco Knight gets negative attention. The moral of the story falls a bit flat, but the vibrant illustrations will keep readers involved to the end, where a new knight foreshadows a future where the same mistakes will be made again. VERDICT With humor and whimsy, this book is a good read, but may not stand out as particularly exceptional compared to other food-related books.--Veronika Parrone

A taco dinner is a sure path to many youngsters' tummies--and hearts. Maynor and Lourenço's tale centers on a kingdom whose inhabitants are far too busy to bother cooking. Instead, they rely on the Knights of Dinner--among them the Pizza Knight, the Dumpling Knight, the Noodle Knight, and the Knight of Leftovers--who deliver various meals according to their specialty. The established suppertime rotation is interrupted by the arrival of newcomer Taco Knight, who quickly becomes everyone's favorite. He supplants the other knights, serving tacos every evening. But too much of a good thing becomes boring, and the villagers soon tire of Taco Knight, even booing when he arrives. Late Knight Snack comforts Taco Knight and explains that variety is important. Chastened, Taco Knight helps the others prepare their specialties. Things return to normal…until Pancake Knight shows up. Readers will practically be able to taste those crunchy tacos, savory soups, and cheesy pizza slices, thanks to the amusing text, which serves up clever culinary wordplay ("Wrap it up, Sandwich!" "Soup Knight let this idea simmer") as the knights romp across the pages. The digital illustrations rely on word balloons and cartoonish depictions of the diverse characters to spice up the plot. Adds a dash of fun to the reading menu.(Picture book. 5-8) Copyright (c) Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
