Book - 2025

"A lonely boy must defend his fellow monsters, home, and absent-minded mad scientist dad from an angry mob and an evil carnival proprietor in this macabre and zany coming-of-age story! Stitch Head was the first creation to be born--and the first to be forgotten. He’s the adorably monstrous creation of Professor Erasmus Erasmus, a man who has breathed life into over three hundred creatures with all manner of fangs, tails, and eyes. But as good as Erasmus is at giving life, he’s equally bad at taking care of it. And so the duty falls to Stitch Head to ensure his siblings don’t tear Castle Grotteskew apart. Despite having a handle on the threats within the castle, however, no one is prepared for the conniving Mr. F--the ringleader o...f a traveling circus of wonders and oddities--to show up at Grotteskew’s front door. He offers Stitch Head a new chance at family--one that will make him known by the whole world and forgotten by no one. The terms of Mr. F’s deal may be glowing, but there’s something dark lurking behind his eyes. As Stitch Head will learn, not every monster is a meanie…and some seemingly normal folk can be the nastiest beasts of all!"--provided by the publisher.

Gr 4 Up--In a story set in "yesteryear," a boy named Stitch Head faces big challenges to his life of secrets and solitude. Stitch Head was the first creation of Professor Erasmus, a man who has created so many other monsters since that Stitch Head has been forgotten. When the ringleader of a traveling circus offers to make Stitch Head the star of his show, the boy hopes that this opportunity will turn his life around. But letting this stranger into Castle Grotteskew is going to have consequences that Stitch Head never expected. On the outside, this is a cute, silly, and scary story. But underneath that is the broken heart of a little boy who just wants to be appreciated and understood. This tense but charming story will appeal to readers who enjoy themes of identity and found family. This book features a darkly colorful visual style similar to The Nightmare Before Christmas, and it is populated with plenty of amazing monsters. VERDICT This is a quirky, sweet, and spooky graphic novel with appeal to readers who enjoy stories that challenge their expectations of good and evil.--Andrea Lipinski

A lonely little monster gets a chance to be a hero. Stitch Head, a small doll-like creation, lives alone in a corner of Castle Grotteskew, managing the monsters that mad scientist Professor Erasmus Erasmus brings to life. Professor Erasmus loses interest in his creations almost immediately, but Stitch Head--the professor's first creation and erstwhile childhood friend--hopes that his master will one day embrace him again. When the professor's 309th creation awakens, Stitch Head acts fast to subdue him and accidentally makes a friend of the monster--a gargantuan bunny/raccoon/werewolf hybrid. Meanwhile, a new monster has arrived in the nearby town, in the form of a sinister, scheming ringleader named Fulbert, who's seeking new additions to his Traveling Carnival of Unnatural Wonders. After years of being ignored by his master, Stitch Head is eager to run away and join Fulbert's coterie--but the mustachioed man has something more dastardly in mind. The setting is comedically cinematic, with a shadowy, outsize castle, endless haunted hallways, and a richly kitschy mad scientist's laboratory. The professor's crew of creations inhabiting the castle are colorful and imaginative--bat-winged brains, alienlike blobs, and furry and feathered beasties. Based on Bass and Williamson's chapter-book series, this graphic novel adaptation benefits beautifully from the addition of the visual element--a gleeful stylistic echo of Tim Burton's 1990s work in particular. All human and humanlike characters are pale-skinned. Goofily gothic graphic entertainment.(Graphic paranormal. 8-12) Copyright (c) Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
