Kerryn Mayne

Book - 2025

"Strange things are happening behind the bright pink facade of Bayside's premier laundromat, Joyful Suds; home to Joy Moody and her twin daughters. For much of their lives, Joy has been lying to Cassie and Andie. What started as a colorful tale to explain how the twins came to live with her grew over the years and was always something she meant to set straight. Joy really did think she had more time. Worse still, Joy is struggling to define the truth from the lies. The girls have long believed they are vital to the future and must stay hidden to stay safe. Joy has told them that their impending 21st birthday is significant; they will step into their roles as leaders of a revolution and life as they know it will change. Joy was rig...ht -- everything will change, just not in the way they expected. On Andie and Cassie's birthday, Joy Moody is found dead and her girls face a world they are not prepared for without their mother. Joy Moody is out of time... in more ways than one." --

Twins Andie and Cassie have spent the first 21 years of their lives extremely sheltered. Their mother, Joy Moody, keeps them protected from the rest of society, allowing only limited exposure outside of the laundromat they own and operate. Her reasoning is simple: they are from the future, and she must keep them safe until they return. However, the reality is far more complicated. Joy has built their life on lies she can no longer discern from the truth. When Joy is found dead, the mysteries left to solve extend beyond what the twins always believed. Mayne interweaves a compelling mystery with an underlying bittersweet story about misguided love. Joy is equal parts infuriating and admirable, with her behavior waffling between controlling and compassionate, and she forces readers to consider gray areas regarding the difference between right and wrong. Heartbreaking and quirky, this is perfect for fans of Mayne's previous work, Lenny Marks Gets Away with Murder (2022), as well as Liane Moriarty's Nine Perfect Strangers (2018).
