Review by Library Journal Review

This is a bright, friendly introduction to granny squares. The author's love of crochet is infectious, and the illustrations are bold and colorful enough to add much-needed sunshine and rainbows to the gloomy attics, closets, and storage bins where frustrated would-be fiber artists toss their half-finished projects. With an emphasis on the granny square's simplicity and flexibility, the book offers an easy introduction--and for experienced crocheters, there are new patterns as well as opportunities for adding individual flair to projects. There's a section on tools (with Pinterest-worthy pictures of organized bins of supplies and projects), a chapter on the basics, patterns written and illustrated to accommodate multiple learning styles, and so much more. Rowe also weaves in detailed information about creating borders, variations on granny motifs, and color changes in ways that are, again, accessible without being boring. VERDICT This book feels like being wrapped up in the warm hug of a granny-square afghan: cozy yet practical, with just the right mix of colors and techniques for anyone who wants to snuggle up for the evening with a hook and a ball of yarn.--Emily Bowles

There is so much I love about crochet, from working simple, repetitive, and calming stitches, to creating colorful projects that brighten up my day. But one of my absolute favorite things to crochet is the classic granny square. I don't know of another technique that is so versatile. You have the freedom to choose whether you keep it simple and work using a single color, or go bold and use all the colors of the rainbow for a multi-colored masterpiece. You can even try a monochrome look by crocheting in black and white. The possibilities are endless, and the choice is in the hands of the maker, giving us the perfect opportunity to be as creative and colorful as we like. The adaptability and simplicity of granny squares makes them a firm favorite among crocheters of all skill levels. Granny squares are a great project for a beginner, because you only need to learn one main stitch for a classic granny square. You can practice by making lots of different squares, which you can then join together to make something beautiful and useful. This modular nature allows for easy construction of larger projects, making them an ideal choice for everything from blankets and scarves to bags and clothing. Granny squares are now at the height of fashion, and if you're eager to join the granny square trend, then you're in the right place. With my step-by-step tutorials, I will ease you into the never-ending world of granny squares. By taking small steps, and getting comfortable with terms and techniques, you'll soon master the art of the humble granny square. In no time at all you'll be moving on to more intricate motifs. Get ready to let your imagination and creativity run wild as you start creating your own handmade clothes and accessories, and most of all, have lots of fun. Cheers to the timeless granny square.
