The summer Hikaru died

Mokumokuren

Book - 2023

"It has Hikaru's face. It has Hikaru's voice. It even has Hikaru's memories. But whatever came down from the mountains six months ago isn't Yoshiki's best friend. Whatever it is, it's dangerous. Carrying on at school and hanging out as if nothing has changed--as if Hikaru isn't gone--would be crazy...but when it looks so very like Hikaru...and acts so very like Hikaru..."--

Review by Booklist Review

Yoshiki knows that Hikaru, his best friend, is dead. But whatever came back from the mountains in Hikaru's place looks and acts just like Hikaru. Yoshiki finds himself unable to stay away from this being, whatever it is, because he loves Hikaru. And the thing that looks like Hikaru loves Yoshiki. This unsettling and creepy horror manga about a bond between two boys that cannot be torn asunder, even in death, is visceral and oddly beautiful. The art is breathtaking, even as the horror seeps in. Mokumokuren captures summer in Japan so perfectly that the reader can practically hear the cicadas calling through the page. A haunting story of grief and love, this is a manga that will stay with the reader long past reading. Perfect for fans of the works of Junji Ito and Kazuo Umezz, as well as any fan of the BL genre looking for something unique, this is a can't miss manga.
