Like many cookbooks focused on a single macronutrient, this was born from Hartlaub's personal health journey and spiced up by her subsequent recognition that while a single, restrictive nutritional philosophy like the ketogenic diet might not be sustainable or pleasurable for life, it can teach valuable lessons about how to build healthy and hearty plates. These protein-forward recipes offer familiar flavors and lower-carb takes on classics (e.g., replacing tortillas with the now-TikTok-famous cauliflower tortilla hacks) that will satisfy carnivores' appetites for comfort and ease. Readers may want to take Hartlaub's nutritional advice with a grain of salt, as it is based more on personal experience than on scientific nutrition principles or formal training in dietetics. (Hartlaub is the creator of the TikTok and Instagram accounts LowCarbStateofMind.) However, overall, the recipes offer nourishing and original ideas for eggs, dairy, seafood, poultry, pork, and beef.
