Review by Library Journal Review

Quilting patchwork blocks such as the quarter square triangle and flying geese are translated into crochet in this standout crochet blanket book. Dividing the book into three chapters, Gibney starts with the basic techniques to give granny squares a quilted look. She employs a slightly different method from that used to create a traditional granny, so crocheters should not skip the beginning section. Gibney then gives examples of different joining techniques, encouraging crafters to choose the joining method that works best for them and the project. In chapter two, crocheters learn how to turn those patchwork squares into blocks. With 12 of the most beloved quilt designs as inspiration, readers can recreate in crochet blocks patterns such as the bear paw, log cabin, and sawtooth star. Photographs, charts, and clear instructions guide crocheters as they lay out the patchwork squares into the larger blocks. Chapter three boasts 10 blanket projects that use a combination of the second chapter's 12 blocks. VERDICT In the author's note, Gibney states that this pattern book is a tribute to the versatile granny square. By using building blocks traditionally found in quilting, she has elevated the humble granny to a modern showpiece in these sophisticated blanket designs.--Lynnanne Pearson
