Writing under the pen name Blake, the duo of Rebecca Sirois (On Little Wings) and Jaima Fixsen (The Specimen), who most recently teamed up on The Surgeon's Daughter, have created a moving account of one of the many battles women fought to gain equality and respect in a man's world. Living in London in 1849, Nora Gibson is the only woman surgeon in England and must daily contend with the prejudices and condescension of the men in her field. Supported by her eccentric adoptive father, Dr. Horace Croft, she runs her own small hospital from their home. There, alongside her husband, Dr. Daniel Gibson, Nora treats patients, mostly women, and tries to improve the practice of obstetrics by educating midwives. As other physicians in obstetrics resist the integration of women midwives into the field, and as Nora fights to convince them, a cholera epidemic unfolds, overwhelming hospitals. In the midst of the epidemic, Nora is finally taken seriously; her approach to women's health and medical training would go on to be widely influential. VERDICT Recommended for those who appreciate a strong woman protagonist who advocates for her rights and the rights of women everywhere.--Sandra Knowles
