Review by Booklist Review

Like moths to a flame, we wander through dark passageways searching for some form of light. A comforting voice in times of uncertainty and darkness, Smith, author of many books for children and adults, brings a lantern within these pages. She splits the book into five chapters, or practices to work on: gratitude, love, joy, happiness, and hope. Within each practice are small stories from Smith's past, such as the joy of a family member's first time at the movies. The effect is a nonlinear memoir that incorporates self-help and spiritual (but not religious) devotional elements. There are journal prompts throughout the book, as well as small poems and snippets of wisdom sprinkled within. In her introduction, Smith says that the book can be read in order or simply opened to a random page, letting the book guide you to what you need to hear. A perfect read for those who enjoy memoirs with takeaways as well as those looking to build these five practices into their lives.
