It girl The life and legacy of Jane Birkin

Marisa Meltzer, 1977-

Book - 2025

"Jane Birkin was synonymous with chic. Her effortless style and artistic legacy have been immortalized through her music and film career. And, of course, she was the inspiration behind one of the world's most coveted bags, the Hermès Birkin. But who was the real woman behind the it girl? Now, New York Times bestselling author Marisa Meltzer sheds new light on Birkin's enigmatic life and explores her profound influence on generations in a rigorously reported biography unlike any other. It Girl paints a vivid portrait of Birkin and her profound legacy, from her early years in 1960s London to her rise as a beloved celebrity in France, detailing personal challenges, her relationships with creative powerhouses, and the duality of... her public and private selves. Based on interviews and deep archival research, Meltzer reveals the nuances of Birkin's character: her famously tempestuous romantic relationships, life with her three famous daughters, and the creative energy that drove her. It Girl tells the story of her indelible impact on femininity and style, and how what we think of as French girl style grew from her. Far from being just a muse, Birkin is at last given her well-deserved due." --

The name Jane Birkin brings to mind luxury handbags, iconic fashion, and tumultuous romances. Yet Jane Birkin herself was an actress, singer, artist, and mother who wished to be known on her own, for her own work. Meltzer (Glossy, 2023) traces Birkin's life from her early years in England, where she became known for her striking fashion sense and stage acting. Birkin's three major romantic partners, John Barry, Serge Gainsbourg, and Jacques Doillon, all approached her as a creative muse. Gainsbourg wrote songs for her, including the risqué hit duet that catapulted her music career, "Je T'aime . . . Moi Non Plus." As she aged, Birkin sought ways to define her career for herself, not as an ingenue inspiring a man. Her own film work and writing blossomed in her later career, and she continued to perform until nearly her final days. Bringing together diverse sources from Birkin's performances, interviews, and her diaries, Meltzer gives readers insight into the complex woman Jane Birkin was. It Girl is a remarkable portrait of an iconic figure.

Remembering Jane Birkin, the actress, singer, and style setter. Born in London, Birkin (1946-2023) was the daughter of a respected actress and a successful businessman. She received a typical education for the time, including a short stay at a Parisian finishing school, but the 1960s "Youthquake," with England setting trends in music and fashion, was a bigger influence. As journalist Meltzer notes in this nuanced biography, Birkin eagerly adopted new styles, adding her own touches, most famously a Portuguese basket used as a handbag. She followed her mother's footsteps and became an actress, finding roles in trendy movies like Michelangelo Antonioni's 1966 thriller,Blow-Up. At 17 she met and married film composer John Barry, 13 years her senior. But the marriage fell apart in 1967--four months after she gave birth to a daughter, Kate. Going to Paris for an audition, she met Serge Gainsbourg, the notoriously louche actor, director, and musician. They worked together in film and music, most famously recording the song "Je t'aime…moi non plus," which generated shock waves with its aural simulation of sex. Their relationship, which included the birth of Birkin's second daughter, Charlotte--the future actor and singer--lasted until 1980, when she left Gainsbourg for director Jacques Doillon. Beyond appearing in more than 70 films, captivating audiences with an "unforgettable face," Birkin was "the real version of an often-overused term: a fashion icon," Meltzer writes. "She maintained a fierce dedication to her own aesthetic that has charmed and inspired for decades. She is the reason why high-waisted denims with flared hems, fluttery white peasant blouses, Repetto ballet flats, crocheted dresses, and woven baskets as handbags are still worn today; why the French girl style proliferates. She is carefree elegance personified." An affectionate and appealing account of the young Englishwoman who became a French icon. Copyright (c) Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
