In her follow-up to The Resurrectionist, Dunlap takes readers to 1888 London, where foul murder is afoot. Teenage Adelaide "Dell" Morton has been committed to the Whitechapel Hall Reform School for her delinquency--and because her guardians want to be rid of her. Dell, who loves to read penny dreadfuls filled with true crime, longs to be a detective one day and plans, from day one, on escaping from Whitechapel. Those plans are derailed when she meets her new roommate, Pippa, who becomes someone she doesn't want to lose, and by a series of violent murders happening near the school. As soon as Dell hears about the first woman murdered, she is determined to solve the case. To do so she needs the help of Pippa and Noah, the son of a local butcher who fears that his Jewish community will be scapegoated by police. The trio realize the killer may be closer to home than they could guess, and it will take all their wits not only to solve the case but to survive. VERDICT Dunlap creates an intriguing cast of characters set in a meticulously drawn late 19th-century London. For fans of Emilia Hart and Anna Lee Huber.--Jane Jorgenson
