Doctor Elizabeth Gwinn has just been acquitted after being prosecuted for performing an abortion in North Dakota. Looking for a new job, Liz takes an interview that becomes an abduction. She is now miles from anywhere she knows, in a compound where the community is devoutly patriarchal and the Bible is the only book around. As Liz wraps her head around her circumstances, all she wants to do is escape, but the many young and pregnant women there need her help. She isn't sure if there is anyone she can trust, but she does know that making even a single error could land her with the same fate as the compound's previous OB-GYN. The fast pace and fearful atmosphere contribute to this tension-filled story, and the lead character's moral dilemmas about freedom for herself and for her patients present much food for thought. VERDICT Kritzer (Liberty's Daughter) writes a captivating near-future sci-fi novella.--Kristi Chadwick
